I just love this cozy little series so much. This book — not a standalone — opened so many interesting doors (literally and figuratively). Cursed lands! Unhinged moms and dads! A cast of nightmare creatures! But so much was left unexplored. I would have loved to see wider arcs for some of the characters (the antagonists in particular) and also a bit more darkness because there was so much potential for creeps and scares and haunts.

… but the most disappointing part for me: I was not picking up what Wendell was putting down in this one

I did enjoy this book overall, however it felt kinda rushed and disconnected compared to the other 2 in the series. I didn’t feel as connected to the characters and the big plot points seemed kinda anticlimactic. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a good book and you should definitely read it if you liked the other 2 in the series. It’s just not quite as good as the other 2.

A charming, if a little too convenient, closure to the Emily Wilde series. Beautiful flowing prose, a magical world that feels like a fever dream and one of the best characterizations of fae I have read about in books (this applies to the whole trilogy). Plot moved rather quickly, though there were some pacing issues in several parts of the novel. Although a lot of the charming side-characters make a return, unfortunately those are more cameo-appearances than anything significant.
Emily has grown a lot through the series, and I am so glad to report that while the previous two books were almost entirely spoiled for me by her ridiculously rude and obnoxious behavior, she had made some progress in the emotional intelligence department. Wendell is ever charming and unpredictable, a true faerie king come to life from the page, and remains the best character in this trilogy (apart from Shadow). Out of the new supporting cast - lord Taran was the one that held my attention more than anybody else - delivering one of my favorite lines in the series. There is something utterly intriguing and believable in his absolute cruelty and indifference as the oldest living fae. I wish I had seen more of Ariadne especially, as well as Dr. Farris - who is always able to represent a sharp and wise retort to Emily's often too disorganized and weirdly emotionally-charged (almost childish) thought patterns.
The world the author has created is absolutely breathtaking - both terrifying and stunning at the same time, filled with magnificent magical creatures. The proposal scene was quite well executed and made sense of the main character dynamic, but to me the most special moment was the way Shadow's sub-story was resolved. Shadow has been one of my favorite characters throughout the series and Wendell's gift was so well thought out that it almost made me cry. Orga has also been a highlight and I think the author very correctly has captured the (lack of) logic in a cat's behavior, which makes it one of the most fitting species for a inhabitant of faerie.
Overall, Emily Wilde has been quite a charming, low-stakes(for the most part), cozy fantasy with a romance subplot. I would overall recommend the series, and I believe all three books have their positives and negatives, but that surely makes them even more worth reading.

I should have read the first two books beforehand because I had no memory of what happened in the second book. It was like how I felt with Oathbound (Legendborn Cycle) which I felt hindered me from fully enjoying it because I had to remember what happened in previous books and previous characters based on context clues. Thankfully, it didn’t take me too long to remember who was who, etc.

Also, I didn’t realize that this was the last book in the series and now I’m sad :(
