Storyline was heartwarming. It was a very emotional read. But I never felt invested in the characters.

Heyyy so that what preeety good. I LOVED the plot twist (a lil predictable but still got a scream out of me). Their development at first was a little bit short (one of the only things I didn't enjoy) but the plot💯💯💯. One of the only book I read where the main characters actually think once in a while🤗🤗🤗. It helped me get out of a reading slump so it was quite entertaining and enjoyable, he changed for her🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY IMA NEED REBECCA YARROS TO REIMBURSE ME FOR ALL THE EMOTIONAL DAMAGE SHES CAUSED ME! I should have known this book would be emotionally heartbreaking but to start the story like that at the beginning?? (Sigh) lowkey criminal, but nonetheless Rebecca Yarros had me hooked and crying from the very opening of this story. Ember and Josh’s story was a unique and interesting story from straight to finish. Just as I thought I knew what this story was going to be, it surprised me in a few ways that made an impact on both Ember and Josh’s connection.
When I think of this book, I just remember how I stumbled upon a review from someone saying, twelve percent into the book they were crying and…they were right, but I also ended up crying on other moments in this story too. Rebecca Yarros highlighted some of the raw realities that I imagine people who have family members in the military, army, etc. experience on a variety of levels. From deployment, moving to different places, and the horrible loss of losing a loved one in active duty, this book explored it all. Ember never thought she’d one day open her front door, and irrevocably change her entire family’s lives, but it did in fact happen regardless. Seeing how Ember and her family struggled through the tough loss of losing a member of their family was heartbreaking. As I read, I felt like I was alongside Ember and her family. In addition, I was so immersed in the story that I felt all the emotions that Ember experienced. Ember’s story was one that showed her taking on the responsibilities that normally would fall on a parent or older than her, but she stepped up for her family, even when that meant having to keep everything together for the sake of everyone else.
In the midst of all the grief, and heartbreak, Ember found herself meeting someone from her past that she never expected seeing. The moment Josh Walker was introduced in the book, it kind of just felt right. With everything that Ember was dealing with, in a moment of pure agony and frustration, Josh appeared at the perfect moment to come through and help Ember. The fact that Ember and Josh knew each other since they went to the same high school was nice to give them some familiarity. Josh was an intriguing character and despite his bad boy/ playboy personality, he actually wasn’t that type of guy contrary to popular belief. The real side of Josh was the type of guy who would swoop in a moments notice to help Ember or any member of her family if need be. The way that Josh wasn’t just someone who wanted to help Ember, but put her needs first was something that I really appreciated seeing throughout this story. Similar to this whole book, Josh wasn’t exactly the type of guy who I expected, he equally surprised me with the revelations about his past, his connection to Ember from even back in high school, to the reality that he kept hidden from Ember caught me off guard. Josh had layers to him that continued to reveal so much more about the type of guy he was, and in the end, it wasn’t hard to fall for him.
This whole book was one that had me crying, getting emotional, getting angry on behalf of Ember, as well as loving each of these characters protectively. Once I started this book there was no stopping me. I needed to know what was going on in Ember’s life, to see how Josh and Ember would work together, and more. The romance was one that had its own journey of seeing Ember allow herself the chance to be fully vulnerable with Josh, and give him a chance with her. Josh consistently showed up for Ember and always fought for her because, he loved her, and knew she was worth the wait. Even when it seemed like all was lost, Ember realized that life wouldn’t be the same if she wasn’t with Josh, and thank goodness they worked it all out in the end. This book had me also loving the sibling dynamics, more so with Ember and her little brother, Gus. Gus and his bond with Ember was so endearing and then his friendship with Josh was utterly adorable! Overall, this book was amazing and it really tugged on my heartstrings. Even through the tears, and bits of sadness, there was also some rays of lighthearted fun that were equally satisfying to see unfold in this book.
