That plot twist had me wanting to throw the book across the room but it's a library book so I can't.

I wish characters were developed more. One character struggled and suddenly they didn't with one paragraph explanation. I realize this was a debut novel though. I did love the MMC tho.

Not sure how to rate this. It's excellent writing, I love the Empyrean series and from that I would read anything Yarros wrote.

However, I am very anti-war and this is an uncomfortable amount of army propaganda. Especially over the Afghanistan war, which was an unjustifiable invasion on a people who didn't deserve it.
I also think that I have some bias because she is literally 20 years old, and I find it hard to believe this is an epic love story that is worth all the fuss, and not just a first love.

the positives for me are the way she wrote Josh's love for Ember. He really admired her, he respected her skills and intelligence (like the debate team stuff). Too often you read a romance and it is generic, the author can't explain why their protagonist is so special and worthy of this intense love.

I think the portrayal of grief was very real and I liked that it never stopped throughout the book. It hit everyone in different ways, and at different times. I thinj that is so important to show.

For the negatives, I think she got over Riley too quickly. Not as a person because he seemed awful, but the trust issues seemed to just be glossed over. I also found it uncomfortable that she was a virgin when Josh was so experienced.  She really didn't need to be a virgin for the plot to work.

It would have had more impact for me if she had stuck with her resolve and not gone back to Josh romantically. She could have still pinned him at the ceremony for her dad as a nice touch. But I do think it made more sense that she would move on from him, this was a life she never wanted.

Overall, it is SO readable. The characters are really well written and believable, and I found myself thinking about them when I wasn't reading it. I want to read the rest of the series as it's definitely a great romance.
I think I need to put my personal bias aside and just enjoy it for what it is.
