I was shocked by how accurate the characters' interactions with each other were. It seems crazy to me that this author isn't Greek, and compiled all this information from simply research. Incredible. The translator obviously helped, but there is no way to translate something into a better story than it is, at least not to this degree. It did feel slightly "and they have a strange magical love in that magical country" at the end but I'll forgive it cause the story is that good
Graphic: Ableism, Body horror, Confinement, Death, Emotional abuse, Gun violence, Infidelity, Terminal illness, Violence, Medical content, Grief, Death of parent, Murder, Abandonment, War, Injury/Injury detail, and Pandemic/Epidemic
Moderate: Alcohol
Minor: Drug use, Sexual content, and Pregnancy

I really enjoyed this book. Not a book I would normally picked up from the shelf as it had that samey feel as many other books in the charts. This was February's book in our book club and with the horrid weather here in UK, the descriptions of glorious Crete weather kept me warm! Anna's character provoked a strong reaction in me! She made me angry, whilst Maria, the complete opposite, was a little frustrating with how angelic she was. The descriptions of Crete, Spinalonga and the characters were fabulous and I forgot all about Alexis and Ed. I was so engrossed in the story of the Petrakis family, I was sad when it came to an end.

mesmerising couldn’t put it down great research went into making this an enjoyable read with a dark subject as the undercurrent. One I won’t forget for sure

Interesting & enjoyable but I found the characterization of both Maria and Anna too one sided & the victim-blaming if Anna rather disturbing.

Honestly, I did not go through with this book. I made it to page 153 and then I just had to put it aside. When it doesn't make you forget that you have to do your laundry, clean or make you ignore the outside world, it's just not a good book. This is the most boring books I ever read... Or tried to read.

I can't really say anything about this book apart from the fact that I loved it. I loved it from the start till the end. I have never felt such love for any non series book ever.
This book taught me the little sorrows and perfect happiness of life and how people still keep moving forward.
