I couldn’t put this one down. I’m so sad the third book doesn’t come out for another year. I love this wacky group of characters.

Unlike the first book in the series, this sequel is much more plot based. There’s very little romance, and the characters don’t develop quite as much. Despite this, the story is so compelling as the author world-builds in increasingly surprising ways. The author’s bio says she likes to write fast paced books, and this adventure story certainly lives up to that.

I enjoyed getting to know the band of side characters much more deeply in this book. Even Cain won me over in this story as his character was much better fleshed out and he stopped being quite so machismo.

Meren’s relationship with Reven barely progresses in this book, and while it isn’t necessary to make the story great, I do wish the two had a few more opportunities to get to know each other’s lives and backstories. It would have made the last chapters more satisfying. I will say it’s incredibly refreshing to see an intense, jealous hero who doesn’t constantly try to hold the heroine back and instead supports her plans (mostly). More of that, please!

There were a lot of surprising twists in this book that I was happy to not see coming. The author definitely knows how to write a cliff hanger! It will be a long year to wait…
