I wouldn't dare to "rate" this book,
with the author describing his harrowing life story. But giving it a 5 just so that more readers notice the book and get more educated about racism, just as I sure did!

An excellently crafted autobiography. It does engage in some literary choices that transfer the suffering of other individuals onto Douglass (which is to say in some cases Douglass is more concerned with how violence on others impacted him, rather than how it impacted the person being assaulted). Since it is an autobiography, the centrality of Douglass's perspective is not out of place, but it's also important to see how and where he allows his voice to supercede the voices of other enslaved people.
