This is an intriguing take on women. Chekov doesn’t seem to think much of women he encountered in Russia. Olga is nuanced figure who on first approach is pretty passive. But as narrative continues her identity becomes clear. The ending is abrupt and required some pondering.

this isn't just "what chekhov thinks of women" or "chekhov's criticism of women," etc etc, it's "what chekhov thinks of how men think about women" and "chekhov's criticism of society"
