I have a hard time identifying a target audience for this book, but the art was beautiful and the stories were fun. Give it a shot if that premise sounds at all intriguing.

Ghosts. Werewolves. Witches. Giant demon frogs. Just a regular day in the sleepy suburb of Burden Hill. The human population have no clue at all the strange goings on, but their dogs (and one orphan cat) have been busy saving the world.
This is a graphic novel collection of a series of stories that feature a group of neighborhood pets who investigate and solve paranormal crimes. Each story is a complete episodes, but they all tie together in an overarching narrative. This volume ended but there is still more story to come. Who is the voice in the sewers and what more evil is on the horizon?
It is interesting because the author and the illustrator tell a totally engrossing tale and give each of the animals such a vivid personality, you know as the stories go on that they are all behaving in character. And they feel very human, too.
There is one story in the book that had an almost twilight zone feel about it and it was very spooky too.
It concerned a mother dog who comes to the intrepid investigators to help look for her two pups. She turned her back for just a minute and then they were gone. The story plays out just as it would if a human child had been kidnapped and the ending had a bit of a twist that had be gasping in surprise, horror, sadness and a little bit of triumph at beyond the grave vigilante justice. This was Layered and nuanced storytelling and was a standout in the series so far.
The art is beautiful as I've included here. The story flows and now I am waiting to start the next installment.

Terrific graphic novel about a group of dogs (and one cat!) who get involved in supernatural/paranormal/horrorific happenings in their neighborhood of Burden Hill. They're pets who gather to meet in each other's yards to figure out what's going on, or to summon the "Wise Dog", a mythic dog who gives advice for their predicaments, such as Zombie dogs running loose, or needing magic spells to banish witches. I loved the art, which is realistic as far as cartoony depictions of dogs casting magic spells can be :-) and the characters are funny and wise and demonstrate great friendship and loyalty. Has some blood and gore but not too bad for kids, and a couple of "hells" and "Damns" to look out for if you're giving to a younger reader.

The tales collected in this graphic novel are about a group of talking dogs (and some cats) who solve mysterious happenings in their neighborhood. Really scary, disturbing, paranormal happenings. Some of it was even a little too morbid for me, but all of it was good.
I loved Jill Thompson's artwork for the book. It was fresh and engaging, with an almost cartoony, cheerful style that seems like it would contradict the horror-story subject matter, but actually ended up fitting with it quite well. The animal characters were fun and the stories were spooky enough to keep me reading. I'm glad Michael recommended this to me!

I loved this book. The artwork is gorgeous, the characters engaging and heartfelt, and the stories full of adventure, intrigue and a fair amount of horror—exactly what you'd expect from a good comic. I finished it in less than a day and immediately logged on to Amazon to order my own copy. In some ways it reminds me a little of the Tintin books, which is my all-time favorite comic series; it has the same mix of tongue-in-cheek supernatural "genre savvy" and real adventure (although maybe a bit more gore than Hergé ever dared). I highly recommend this collection.
