I heard of this book and had been searching for it ever since. I found it finally in my trusty bookstore only then to find that the author, Maria V. Snyder was there that very same day! I was so excited and got my first book of her's that I have read signed. How funny when now, I realize that she is one of my favorite fantasy authors.

I really loved this story and have been looking for the second one, Magic Study, ever since. Poison Study was just such a wonderful fantasy that I loved and have now read many times. It has great characters, a different fantasy plot and world, and a little romance. How could I not fall in love with these books?

Our leading lady, Yelana was such a kick ass heroine that I have never read before. She might be one of my favorites I have read honestly because she had been to hell and back basically and now taking on another entirely new life. A life that she could die at any moment. Her story has a lot of twists and turns that you just keep running along with to figure out who Yelana really is with vivid memories that Yalena has to endure.

But lets not forget about our other character, one of my favorites as well. I just loved him so much. Valek. In the beginning I wasn't so sure, but that quickly changed throughout the story. I loved how he acted and his arc as a character throughout the first book.

I cannot wait to find out what happens next with these two characters after the shocking end to the story as well.

VERDICT:

Poison Study was such a great ride with so much to keep up with and to look forward to. The characters were so wonderful with an unforgettable romance that formed. Everything was so...magical. I would recommend this book to anyone who loved fantasy. Maria V Snyder is a fantasy author that created a fantasy that I will not forget and keep looking forward to each time I read.

There were parts that were pretty good but overall the story was underdeveloped

I've read this book at least a dozen times over the last ten years, and each time I read it in one sitting because it never fails to completely grab my attention. The characters are all fantastic, and the intrigue keeps you on your toes the whole way through.

Thoroughly Enjoyed this book, story was captivating , characters where interesting and kept me intrigued throughout the whole story. I Recommend this to anyone who's looking for a good mysterious read. For me at least this story was not predictable which I liked. I'm Ready to read Book 2 .

For starters, I'm not sure what this book is and I don't think it does either. It has a good basic premise; a harsh militaristic society with harsh unforgiving rules in the guise fo fairness and equality. It doesn't follow up on it very well though. There is a large discrepancy between what is written and what the reader should feel for example
SpoilerThe commander will have the protagonist whipped if his food is cold, maim a cook for running away after the commander killed his mother, amongst other things but we are told to feel for him and not question the protagonist blood sworn loyalty and willingness to die for him given no reason to do so
The romantic interest it sudden and out of nowhere during the final 5sih chapters. The magic system is haphazardly shoved into the last 1/4 of the book. This book isn't about really about poison, magic, war, or anything really it's just a series of random events.
