Fun and sometimes even innovative YA novel, with surprisingly likable characters and worldbuilding that feels natural, if a bit simplistic at times. The conglomeration of Asian cultures into a single monolith is problematic in some instances, but I do think the author was aware of the differences, even if that wasn’t always the impression in the text. Creative writing and striking characters with clear agency are the strengths of this book.

An absolutely fantastic read for younger readers! It was one of my favorite books in middle school and I'm glad to say it holds up! It's not perfect, I wish there were a bit more character development, and as a 19yr old, I can definitely see how it is not written for my demographic. I can't wait to finish this series in the coming year finally!

I found that I was a little creeped out by the story a bit. I decided that I wouldn't continue the series since I know it gets darker from here.

this book was really good! i love marissa meyer as always. however i could tell it was one of her earlier works. i was able to guess the spoiler
that cinder is princess selene
literally the first page it was mentioned. but it was so well written, i love kai and cinder, and it ended on a cliffhanger so i guess i’ll have to read the next one!!

I still think this is one of the best YA retellings I know of. It comes with wonderful representation of women being different and being knowledgeable about tech stuff and yet Cinder has such a big heart despite her less than ideal living situation with this very cruel step mother.
