A lot of different characters with various distressing backstories. Some characters you feel for and want them to succeed, other characters, once you find out what they have done, you have less sympathy for. Really highlights the “people can change” narrative as well as the idea that people and life is not binary. No one is truely good or bad but a mix of both. I loved the truth about the Harry Quebert Affair and this book stands up to meet the quality of Dicker’s first novel. Both are mysteries but ultimately I found them very different with “The Dissapearance of Stephanie Mailer” being more of a traditional who done it with more of a police aspect. However both deal with incidents occurring in the past coming back to haunt a small town community. I would say this is an easier read than The Harry Quebert Affair but not quite as satisfying.
