What happened in 620 pages? Nothing. These characters are so naive and if they would open their eyes for one second and talk to each other then they would have seen that the enemy is literally sitting next to them. I loved the first book but this was so slow paced and exhausting to read. The ending shocked me and I may or may not have shed a tear.

Gosh, what a fantastic sequel!
I loved being back with these characters again, watching them grow and strengthen and bond. I think the character growth is one of my favourite things in this series. I love watching Arlo start to believe in herself and her own value, Nausicaa learning to soften and let people in from time to time, Aurelian and Vehan setting things aside to just BE with each other.
I also really loved having more Celadon in this book. He’s such a delightful character and we learn so much more about him in this book and it made me so happy to see genderqueer asexual representation on the page like that.
The plot is interesting but the letdown for me was how long it took to get to the point. I don’t mind a slow build but sometimes it really felt like nothing was happening which was a bit disappointing.
Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am eager for the next one!

I...need to let that ending...just....
In short: a really fantastic second instalment in the Hollow Star series. Yet more wonderful queer rep, a return to some of my favourite characters, and yet more excellent worldbuilding. (Very pleasing to see a few of my ships sail, too)
*I'll return to elaborate more on (/edit) my rating once I've left enough time between finishing and reviewing to clearly state my mind *

you know how you can tell that a book is leading up to another book? like the author was laying down the thickest foundation ever to make sure the house built on top of it is a killer fucking ending book?
i think that's where this book falls.
was it good? Yeah! was it great? Nope!
the pros: my four queer fantasy children returning to me and being their dramatic queer selves, sword fights with magical creatures, lightning bending, queer drama, the banter!!
the cons: a story that felt like it was going nowhere and everywhere, sympathetic backstories for the series villain, love triangles, little romantic scenes for my favorite couple, not enough Nos sarcasm, not enough celadon
listen i am not part of the book community that believes that villains need to like morally gray and have reasons for why they act as terrible as they do. why can't an evil queen just be an evil queen? why can't the only reason she wanted to fuck with everyone was because she wanted the crown and she lost?
i don't know i still liked the book, but compared to the first, this one definitely fell like the beginning of something great, but i didn't get the chance to reach the great part
