In a way, this is a conclusion. The series was originally called The Ascendance Trilogy, and the fourth book didn't come out till six years after the third. And as a conclusion, it's not bad. I was worried because I had mixed feelings about the last book, but this is a definite improvement.

The book kicks off at the start of the war. Imogen's been kidnapped, and Carthya is being attacked by multiple kingdoms, something that never quite gets enough of an explanation. I get what Avenia's problem is, but kingdoms don't just decide to join in on wars out of nowhere, right? Anyway, some of my concerns were founded. Jaron was, once again, not thinking things through and trying to make bad decisions. Thankfully, that got a lot better as the book went on.

Another thing is how things just happen way too conveniently for Jaron. Like if Jaron wants to steal something, the guards will suddenly decide to take a break. It feels like the author is writing down to kids.

Thankfully, a lot of my issues in the book were only present at the beginning of the book. As we got more into the action and the war, things improved. I like Jaron's strategies and snark and how much he cares about Carthya. I like the friendships he's formed along the way. I'm not invested in the romance with Imogen, but that's easy enough to ignore. These books have all been fun, well-written, and easy to read.

The ending was satisfying. The way the battle ended was a bit too... middle-grade (and not in a good way), but it wasn't bad. And is it just me, or are the characters able to travel to different parts of Carthya really fast? How small is this kingdom?

I don't have a lot to say about the audiobook, just that it's done well and didn't take away from the book at all.

Overall, a decent read. The characters development with these books has been great. I especially like Tobias and Amarinda much more than I'd have expected. There was one specific decision that I disliked (it's a spoiler). And while I liked this book more than the last, this feels like a series that peaked at book 1. So far, at least. We'll have to see how the next two books fare.

Unfortunately, my previous - FIRST - review was deleted. So here's my 2ND review.
I'm pretty sure my opinion hasn't changed: I still believe this is an excellent book. I love the intensity and ingenuity of Jaron and the plot. Here's my new character list:
Jaron - 5
Imogen - 4.5
Amarinda - 5
Tobias - 5
Roden - 5 ( I really love him)
Fink - 5
Eric - 4
And of course I don't need to explain villains

I really love this series, but this book was kind of a letdown. Much as I love Sage/Jaron, he is so frustrating at times, and I found it very irritating that he never shared his plans with anyone. How could anyone have a close relationship with someone who not only doesn't make a good faith show of trust, but who also doesn't have enough consideration for the feelings of those who loves him to let them in on what's going on? Plus, I saw most of the plot twists coming from a mile away. In some ways, it felt a lot like a rehash of the previous installments.

So, not a terrible ending, but not very satisfying either.

Not quite as good but I love the characters and the writing. It's always a little predictable and everything tends to work out a little too perfectly but I don't care too much. There was just a little something missing in this one. The armies and values seemed to small, the traveling too quick, and in general just a little less well put together and compelling. Still, it's easy to read and fun. I like the authors style and can't wait to read more.
