The plot was interesting and engaging during the first part of the book but fell apart during the end. The ending felt incomplete, as if there was a chapter or two missing. The characters were all engaging and interesting and all felt like they were the age they canonically were.
I struggle to understand what purpose Ara's death was supposed to serve other than shock and a way to provide tension in Jesse and Eliot's stories. I thought it was foreshadowing the fate of the crew, but in the end it felt more like fridging.

The plot follows a group of teenagers (and veteran astronauts) on a journey through space to colonize an earth-like planet called Terra Two. The teenagers are an elite group called “the beater” who were selected from a training academy for future astronauts.

Throughout the book, we follow the teenagers as they become acclimated to space travel and the difficulties that come along with it. Despite their skill and training, almost all of the teenagers suffer through some form of psychological turmoil brought on by the isolation of deep space. These struggles occur among a backdrop of persistent uncertainty about their ability to reach Terra Two.

Oh spends a lot of time developing the plot and cultivating a sense of mystery and anticipation. Oh provides thick descriptions of the crew, their feelings, and the difficulties that they struggle with. Despite the time and attention spent, I still found the plot and the character development lacking. I think the novel would have been better served with fewer main characters to focus on. I also found the ending to be unsatisfying and rushed. Oh spends so much time developing the front-end of the plot that it is almost like she forgets about the ending. All told, the book wasn’t for me but Oh is clearly very creative and a talented writer.

A slow burn and suspense novel about kids and a futuristic world that parallels colonialism <3 through space travel. I still think about these characters and this story even after a couple years since reading. I would definitely reread it.
