This book should've been called Suppression instead, my goodness! I understand it was the social norm of the time to be super reserved, but everything could've been resolved quicker if the two former lovers talked honestly to each other. This was a quiet, melancholy book, complete with windswept English beaches, emerald cliffs, a frigid and stark November, lots of quiet contemplation, held breaths, stolen glances, feigned indifference. I give it a 3 star because although Austen is an amazing writer capable of conveying deep emotions, it's always held very close and quietly to the chest - I know, a product of its time. So everything on the surface seems placid, and the plot a bit dull. I didn't care for some of the side characters that took up so much of the book, especially when they droned on about inane subjects. It reminded me of the side characters in Emma. They serve as comic relief, but I don't find them funny, just annoying and eating up page space?

Another big minus of the book was the lack of payoff! I spent the whole book eagerly waiting for Anne and Wentworth's reconciliation scene, but it happened off page. Again! It's that reservedness, that their fervent declarations of love and regret and relief at being together again is too emotionally big that it has to be hidden from the reader. The last few pages of the book, there were more paragraphs dedicated to the fate of a side character than to the romantic couple...why.

- I can’t stop thinking about that one P&P review that’s like “all this book is is people going over to each others houses” that’s all I could think about during this
- it’s about the yearninggggg like any other “second chance romance” can get tf out of here
- need to watch the movie adaptations ASAP
