Best part of the hard case crime books is the simplicity and ease they provide in giving you a clean crisp story. The bad guy is the hero, the stripper or hooker is the person you roor for and the rest of the characters are expendable. This book had all that, plus a lot of frisky fun writing and plotting.

Using information contained in the deceased Broker's database, Quarry goes to the rathole port town of Haydee's Port, Illinois to prevent a hit and earn some cash in the process. As a result,Quarry puts himself in the middle of two casino owners, both of whom would like to see the other put out of business. Permanently...

I'd say Quarry in the Middle is in the top 10 or 15 Hard Case novels. There is a lot of sex, a lot of violence, and the standard Quarry orgy of violence ending. Quarry proves to be a well-rounded character, a scumbag with some redeeming qualities, even if he does have trouble keeping his pants on. There are a couple twists and I saw the big one coming, but neither are obvious.

If you like Quarry, you'll like this. If you've never read a Quarry before, you can pick this one up without getting lost.

Essentially a trashy romance, but for men - guns, fighting and sex with hot strippers. And very short.

The Worst Quarry (So Far).

Collins had gone to great lengths in the past few books to portray Quarry as a moral man who only kills those that deserve it but late in this one he rapes a girl then jokes about it

If you read the Quarry series, all I can say is it's
another pretty good one. Sure, they're all pretty
formulaic but the author always manages to
wrinkle it up a notch so it remains interesting.

And in this one I really liked the twist ending.

I love this series of mostly new "pulp fiction". I may have grinned at inappropriate places while reading this. But it is a rare thing that I laugh at a book. At the denouement I said to myself, "why didn't he do that right away?" Then he did after closing the door.
It's pretty fun and it only took two hours to read.

Written in between the last Quarry and the First one (dah), we find our anti-hero on a job with a body in his trunk. Quarry has decided on a new line of work now that the "broker" is dead, and he came into possession of a fat file that listed all the contract killers in the broker's employ as well as their work history. The idea is to tail one of the assassins, determine who his next hit might be then go to the intended victim and offer to kill the killer and the person who hired him (as an extra bonus) for a rather substantial fee.

Everything starts to go a little wrong. After Quarry has taken care of the two hit-men sent to kill the owner of the Paddlewheel Casino, he is hired to find out who ordered the hit on its owner, Richard Cordell. Allegedly, the former mob boss and owner of the competing strip jointa and gambling establishment, Quarry soon discovers it was unlikely the old man who is in the throes of dementia.

That's enough totally without spoiling the plot, but I have to admit the ending was a surprise. Lots of fun for us Walter Mittys.

I enjoyed "Last Quarry" but I didn't care for this one at all. The 80s setting felt painted on and not terribly authentic.
