перша половина книжки мені була трохи нудною, бо не розуміла, куди це все веде. другу половину було вже легше (іронічно) читати, бо з'явились і емоції, і сюжет, і багато роздумів. але книжка мене не вразила, і мені сумно це визнавати. можливо, було забагато очікувань

нечасто про це кажу (чи мені так здається?), але у мене вже багато років депресія. здавалось, що це мало б "допомогти" мені відчувати більше емпатії до головної героїні, краще розуміти, про що вона каже. і частково так і було, не сперечаюсь. але, на жаль, (і мені трохи навіть якось незручно це визнавати, бо книжка частково автобіографічна, і Сильвія зрештою дійсно вчинила самогубство) мені не вистачило глибини в історії. мені не вистачило якоїсь глибини цих депресивних думок. не знаю, як краще це сформулювати. в той же час думки про самогубство були дуже реалістично описані, аж з'являлось відчуття дискомфорту (а, може, це просто мене вони так тригерили)

загалом, ця історія непогана, досить коротка, легко і швидко читається, але при цьому має красиву мову авторки (ще й феміністичні і дуже близькі мені, якщо чесно, погляди головної героїні у 50-х), тому розумію, чому вона (тобто книжка) стала класикою. пів бала за неймовірне оформлення від всл, тому що ці ілюстрації (чи навіть просто чорні сторінки, які підсилюють емоції під час прочитання) чудово доповнюють історію

The bell jar is about a young woman named Esther Greenwood, who is attending a fashion magazine scholarship, sponsored by a rich woman. It is clear, that she is a disturbed young woman who is contemplating suicide and later follows through with a serious attempt. It's about women's positions in the 1950s, their desires, their hopes and dreams. I liked the way the author portrayed mental illness and the protagonists struggles to overcome them. The writing style is very witty, sharp and detailed. A very interesting insight into the life of a mentally ill woman in the 1950s.
