Perdido Street Station by China Miéville

dark
Needs editing down. Too much descripion of places and instead neglects character relationships and story. Dense, wordy, and overly pretentious prose. Unrelenting darkness in a gross, dark, violent world with no lovable or redeemable characters and nothing worth rooting for (and an ending apparently that is just as bad). Cool creatures though. Imaginative.

I have to admit I was nervous about approaching this book again. I had started reading it years ago, but didn't get far. This time, I kept going, and I'm glad I did. Perdido Street Station is a intensely descriptive book filled with so much detail about New Crobuzon and its inhabitants. Woven throughout is the story of Isaac and his quest to help Yagharek fly and what that quest ultimately leads to. It'll be a while before the images of this book leave me and I look forward to reading the next book in the series, The Scar.

Half a star off for an inconsistent narrator, but China Miéville never misses!

Very much a fantasy novel, and I tend to lose interest in fantasy. It was extremely well written and interesting but was a bit long for my personal taste. I will look for another novel by this author.
