I have mixed feelings about this. I sort of liked it, but it went in a completely different direction I expected and it sort of threw me off? A lot of the book was focused around death and love after loss, with some kinda heavy stuff going on.

'Two best friends. One missed chance. A night that changes everything.' Really???

This was really sweet. I had no idea what it was about going in. (I listened on audiobook & would recommend audiobook!) & it had grief, sweet love, friendship & finding yourself - in here. There characters were not perfect & there was a lot of heavy things that happened but I felt that the book was well rounded & an enjoyable read/ listen .

Pretty heavy at the beginning.. maybe I’ll pick it back up when I’m in a better head space? 🥲

Group of friends that hurt each other - except for Justin, he’s aight.
I thought this was going to be a romance. It is not a romance. A woman is in love with one another if her friends, loses another, and finds out both of them were lying to her. Then she kinda falls for the psychologist-who-needs-therapy brother of her dead friend.
Add some cheating, dementia, child abuse, threats and family drama. This wasn’t for me.

Stats: Contemporary women’s fiction, fairly romance forward, MF, single first person POV/present tense, no sex, characters in their 30s.  TW: grief due to (MAJOR plot spoiler, I don’t recommend uncovering)
death of a character
, history of cheating, history of child abuse

This starts off slow, and for the first several chapters, I was seriously considering DNF’ing.  Even when I decided to continue reading it, at first I thought it was going to be only ok.  But as I continued to read it, I got hooked, and the latter part of the book was really quite good (although the epilogue was perhaps not as strong).  It was an interesting exploration of how the stories we tell ourselves and others about our lives can be misleading.  The depiction of grief was very true.  This was the first book I’ve read by Mhairi McFarlane, and even if this wasn’t my all time favorite read, in the end I liked this enough to seek out more books by this author, and I would recommend this book to others.
