Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop is a cozy, slice of life read that examines burnout, disappointment, and abandoning your old life for a new one. It was a nice change of pace to read something that wasn’t so plot-focused — just a quiet examination of the inner self and the need for community, explored through a neighborhood bookstore.
Most importantly, she mustn’t forget her roots — that she was a book-lover at heart. If she and her employees loved books, wouldn’t the love also be passed on? If books were the medium though which the four of them communicated, joked, built friendships and love, wouldn’t the customers feel the same way? If people started to believe that there’s something in life that only people who read can discover, stories in this world that only people who read can tell, wouldn’t more of them be seduced to peel back the pages of a book? Yeongju wanted to live her life reading books and introducing them to others, so that when people walked in seeking a story, she could help them find what they needed.

A cozy, sweet novel which incorporates a gentle examination of capitalism and intensive work cultures. The characters are distinct and likeable and I truly enjoyed journeying along with them for a while as they each make their own revelations about life. It has an interesting, almost simplified, writing style - which was well suited to a heartwarming and short novel like this. I liked the short essay type chapters which defined each thought topic.
It is not ground breaking and I understand some of the reviews which call it simplistic or even naive. But I think that this is a great introduction to the concepts it is trying to convey (which are not the norm in capitalist societies like S Korea or the UK) and if you are already familiar with those concepts then a reminder of what is truly important in our harsh world never really goes amiss. I think it's okay to put these things into plain terms sometimes. I didn't find it boring or patronising. It is true that there is no real conflict in the book, which makes it run a little too smoothly, but again I think that's part and parcel of the genre "healing fiction".
A book to read if you've ever thought of quitting your job and chasing a dream; or if you've ever considered giving up on big dreams and learning to appreciate a quiet life...

Logo que pesquisei sobre o livro e a autora já gostei do modo como ela pensa. Ela acredita que os livros são ferramentas importantes que nos ajudam a navegar na vida - seja nos fazendo refletir, empatizar com outras realidades, ou ainda nos inspirando e nos acolhendo.
Não foi surpresa eu ter gostado do livro, mas eu me surpreendi com o quanto eu gostei dos personagens! Eles nos são apresentados aos poucos, quase como se estivéssemos conhecendo colegas de trabalho. Ao longo do livro, somos expostos às suas reflexões, suas histórias, bagagens, conflitos e gostos.
A história é um recorte da vida de Yeongju, não tem grandes reviravoltas ou conflitos externos. Contudo, isso não impede a história de ser interessante e fluída, os capítulos são curtos e bastante episódicos, sempre variando em assuntos e personagens. Os temas abordados são bem universais, como burnout, divórcios, amizades, sonhos etc.
As reflexões apresentadas, por vezes, são um pouco simples, respostas muito fáceis que lembram frases prontas de livros de auto ajuda. Nesses casos, a identidade dos personagens se perde e fica claro que estamos lendo as opiniões da autora. Apesar de ser um ponto que achei negativo, isso não me incomodou tanto, já que os pensamentos me pareceram muito sinceros e se encaixam bem nos diálogos.
E falando em diálogos, a grande parte é bastante fluído e natural. E mais uma vez, trago elogios aos personagens, eles são muito carismáticos e as individualidades são bem trabalhadas.
Acredito que a autora conseguiu cumprir o que ela queria: escrever um livro acolhedor, que nos dá esperança e nos faz querer sonhar. É um ombro amigo que nos lembra que devemos ser gentis com nós mesmos e não nos cobrar tanto.
"[...] Sonho ou diversão? Se tiver que escolher um só, eu também escolheria diversão! Mas o meu coração ainda acelera quando penso em sonhos. Viver sem sonhar deve ser tão monótono quanto viver sem lágrimas."
