Holy shitttt, I fucking love this book. I found this book so fucking interesting and I could barely put it down. I highly recommend this but I would look up the content warning first.

Ok, it has been a few days since I read it. It is maybe not as good as I originally thought. I still liked it but there are a lot of weird things in this book.

had this one as an ebook library hold, realized i'd checked it out for a week and only had a week left to read it and went "ok i'll start it" and finished it in a day

incredibly compelling and deeply unsettling and upsetting book. truly could not put it down. not sure if i would recommend it to anyone and absolutely cannot give it a star rating because i think i both liked and hated it but it really got to me.

irina reading her friend's "secret" blog where she talks about her is like........ oh girl. i get you. i truly get you. stop doing that but also i literally get you.

anyway. really great use of unreliable narrator

Hmmmm šŸ˜‚

This book, nor its main character, was not concerned with being palatable to readers. Itā€™s an ugly read but Iā€™m pretty sure thatā€™s the whole point. I often found the MC to be insufferable with her ā€œIā€™m not like other girlsā€ deal. She is also definition of ā€œhurt people hurt people.ā€ If youā€™re able to read books where the main character isnā€™t likable, have at this šŸ„“

TW: Toxic relationship with a parent, eating disorder/dieting stuff, dubious consent, sexual content (explicit), grooming, SA, teacher-student/adult-minor relationship, drug use, PTSD, smoking, racism/racial microaggression, self-harm, murder, animal death/animal cruelty, classism, mental illness (possibly more, sorry!)
Rep: Queer main/side characters, trans guy minor character

I think this may be my favourite book iā€™ve read so far this year, it was absolutely captivating and had me hooked from the beginning, all whilst having scenes and descriptions that made me want to bury the book underground and never find it again.

What I got from this book was that Irinaā€™s overly sexual photography and her dangerous behaviour was all an analogy for how women are so often ignored in the world that they can do the most disgusting, disturbing things humanly possible, and still no one will bat an eye at them. She can quite literally admit to murder in a fully crowded restaurant, and no one even notices.

The writing in this book was so raw and disturbing, i felt sick to my stomach at times from how graphic some of the scenes were. Definitely check trigger warnings if youā€™re considering reading this, because itā€™s certainly not for everyone!

loved loved loved. i get that this is a Shocking Statement for the girlies who have no idea how to describe this beyond 'um... female american psycho?' but i loved the main character and identified with her in a lot of ways - we share a very similar background (live in the same place in the UK, even!) and it was almost like looking into a very fucked up alternate dimension in a way. i felt sorry for her and i wanted to succeed and i know that realistically, she can't, and she's doomed to be her mother and to get worse and to rot, but that urge to be SEEN and KNOWN spoke to me so distinctly there was no way i just couldn't love her even despite her terrible cruelty and the things she'd done.

the book WAS wobbly at parts, will probably age poorly for things that are admittedly funny now but will be nigh incoherent to anyone reading this in 20 years time, and the ending is a bit of a dealbreaker for some (not me, and not after the disappointment of our wives under the sea - that WAS a stinker) but ultimately, it crafted a world that i could understand and relate to in so many ways. really special book for me.
