Clark has written a dark and twisted character, one in which you get lost in her psyche. She lives in a rampant self destructive world and has never lived any differently. An unreliable narrator only told different through photographs, is the story shes telling us true?
An excellently written dark mystery, funny in places too. Will need to read again with a different perspective.

This book just gave me a lot of bad feelings. The main character, Irina, is awful to everyone. Her evil behavior and the way people excuse it are kind of the points of the book, but it still makes it upsetting to read because it’s just impossible to root for her. She doesn’t grow much throughout the book. But it’s still a very interesting book and it goes by fast. I wish it had gone into more depth about the male gaze in her work- because I don’t see how photographing men being sexualized the way women are could be liberating and would like more perspective. Majorrrrr trigger warnings.

No clue how to rate this book. I hated it but also didn’t. It was an extremely uncomfortable experience. I literally grimaced my way through it.

I’m trying not to give spoilers but I suppose there are MILD SPOILERS below. These are more notes for myself to help me work through how I feel about this book.



Eddie 💔

Bit Dolly/Emma Jane esque. Didn’t like that. Don’t appreciate that lifestyle. Main character is intolerable (but that’s the point.)

Did appreciate the flip of the usual predatory/violent/dangerous/ruthless and detached narrative.

Trauma? Mental health?

Enjoyed the did she/didn’t she?

Was impressed by what seemed like a very sudden/surprising shift about 2/3 through, which in retrospect was actually hinted at.

The use of the name, the cat and the bell (Schrödinger, much?) were clever and subtle but not too subtle.
