My first police procedural in months and it did what it said on the tin. A satisfying easy read but I committed the cardinal sin of not starting with the first in the series so some of the backstory was lost on me. The main characters have intrigued me enough to want to start at the beginning.
It was unusual in that by about three quarters of the way through we knew who had done it (or at the least has strong suspicions) so the later part of the book was more about whether the cops would catch them in time.
The setting of small town Germany worked with the motives and collective silence of the villagers being realistic (or at least believable). The character of Tobias came through well and you really felt for him as he slowly got betrayed by nearly everyone.
If I had criticisms it would be that the ending was a little rushed and trite. I also felt that too many people had been involved in the village coverup and the translation has been clearly done into American rather than English.
Germany doesn't quite hit the same notes as Scandi novels but I will read more of the series so it did it's job.

This kept me hooked from the very first page. There were most plot Twists than she knew possible could happen. She was shocked, gasping out loud and couldn’t stop talking about it she even got me questioning the motives of everyone.
Not one character was in the clear and the ending she couldn’t believe.

Wow, wow and holy sheep dip.
This was layer upon layer upon layer of deceit and lies.
The way this unfolded was very enjoyable to read.
Pia and Oliver and team are great together. What a wild intense ride.

Although you can't judge a book by its cover, you can occasionally choose one by its title. I simply couldn't pass this one up(kind of like choosing wine because of the label) and was quite pleased. A very well-crafted story. Enjoyable characters, a plot with intriguing twists, and all the red herrings are tied up by the end.
