It took me a bit to figure out the timeline and who was who and when. I didn't like that part of it. It was disjointed and through you around as a reader, trying to remember what was happening last time you were there. But was invested, I was hooked. There are some descriptions of torture that made me ill. If that stuff bothers you, you might want to pass.

I loved this book and loved reading Nancy’s story!!! I had never heard of her before and now want to learn so much more. I also loved her relationship with her husband and her pups.
She was a powerful and strong woman who did amazing things. And Ariel Lawhon did a beautiful job bringing it all to life, as usual!!

This book could've been great but the way it is written made it hard to follow and below average. It skips around in time, tells future events then backtracks and tells time preceding events. Makes it hard to follow and put it all together chronologically in your head.
Also, I figured out early on that the chapters titled with Nancy's name are mostly irrelevant, telling the story of how she met and married Henri. Those chapters held absolutely zero interest for me and in my opinion, wasted time that could've been spent telling more details of her fascinating exploits in the war. I ended up completely skipping most of those chapters until about halfway or more thru the book.
After reading this book I think I'm going to find another book that tells this amazing story in a more linear, easy to follow timeline.
