What did I just listen to 🫶🏻 It was nice hearing this in Patti’s voice on the audiobook but I unfortunately could not get down with all the woo woo stuff. She’s definitely a talented writer and I enjoyed when she just talked through the simple events of her day but honestly……it’s a good thing this book was short bc I thought about dnf’ing it like 6 times :/

A slim volume of such abundant strangeness, I am not sure what I think about it.

Écriture magique et stellaire qui donne envie d’écrire aussi. Un peu en surface
Een warme gloed ging door me heen bij ieder woord. Dit boek is comfort. Het is Patti die de welgekomen knuffel geeft waar wel allen naar verlangen. Dankje, Patti Smith
Very powerful and the darkness reeks from every page. Patti Smith writes with anger and despair. It truly made me shiver at times
Very similar to M Train that we get to follow Patti Smith on her travels. But Year of the Monkey has a depth that M Train lacks. It has a theme that is consistent throughout. I could not lay it down and I read it all in one night.

Smith is a wildly talented writer, she brings so much emotion to her work - simple stories become poetry. I enjoyed parts of this book, it was a year that had a lot of grief, I think, but in that there was also love and hope - which is always a good message. There were many parts that I found really lovely and beautiful, but there was also a lot of meandering. I suspect that this is how Smith writes (the first of her writings I've ever engaged with), but I didn't connect to it very well because of that.
I love a non-fiction memoir, but I think I need something more overarching and tying the narrative together. There are some threads in here, but overall, it's more of little snapshots of life. It is still good, and I did enjoy it. I loved the photos included in the book, so I would highly recommend reading the book instead of an audiobook. I think there is something key missing when you don't have those photographs to look at.
Overall, I don't think I've been sold on Smith's writing, but if I stumbled across one of her works in a used bookstore, I'd probably grab it.
