(A) I feel like I knew it was him but convinced myself otherwise at some point. But him moving so slow to restore the wall drawings did it for me. And why was Nicole even there? She’s the worst.

DNF. This book just wasn’t for me.

You can tell this is the first installment of a series. A lot of time is spent developing characters and setting for further books in the series(Disclosure: I cheated a bit and read descriptions of the subsequent books, so I know this small Quebecois village and its inhabitants will continue to play roles in the series as a whole). So, for someone looking for a standalone mystery, I would not necessarily recommend this book. Read as a standalone, it's too thick with character studies of people you don't need to know about to follow the plot.

As a series fan, though, I am intrigued to read more in this mystery series, where a whole artsy little village teeming with characters promises to be a continuing presence.

Mysteries aren't my go to genre, but I really enjoyed this one and will probably continue the series.

The setting was very inviting and I appreciated how charmingly sensitive and human the sleuth is; instead of making some gallows humor joke upon finding a dead body, this guy calls his wife to let her know he loves her. A nice change of pace.

Good fun, humorous whodunnit.  The townspeople will, I assume, grow on you and become like family.  Inspector Gamache is interested in human beings and what they don’t say rather than the details like Holmes or Poirot.

Really enjoyed the main character and the setting in a small canadian village. Well-written, nice pacing, good characters. Will read more.
