I wish this was a book I'd studied in school because I feel like there's so much going on here. I usually struggle with classics because the narrative voice can often be too bland for me but this one was so unique and I found Holden so funny at times.

Genuinely wasn't expecting this book to make me sob but here we are. I felt so bad for him!
The image of Phoebe on the carousel at the end with Holden finally being happy was so moving and it really got me, I'll probably remember that the clearest whenever I think of this book.

I understand the point of this book, but the way in which the point was delivered was actually painful to get through. Chapter 24 is good, that’s the ‘oohhhh’ moment. I just think as a girl introspection is something we start very young so ‘man discovers feelings’ to me is boring. I’ve also been in a similar position, that kind of impending breakdown, maybe I’m just salty that I’m not rich and in NYC. I feel like an anti-intellectual, but the message is pretty ‘meh’ and the delivery wasn’t enjoyable, I can see why this is a favourite among psychopaths

I really dislike the way Holden is often viewed, in both a negative and positive way. He’s not a philosophical bad boy, nor is he a horrible guy. He’s a damaged teenager in a time where there was little to no attention to mental health. The depiction of (what I interpret as) depression in this book hit so close to home, the constant seeking of distraction only to come home to the same empty feeling, i thought it was amazingly done.
