I found the premise and themes of this book interesting and think it worked well as an audiobook. Some of the characters and their actions felt a bit unbelievable to me.

In particular, I wasn’t  convinced by the reasons given for why the bad guys cared so much about the main character and spent the whole book chasing him.

I found the dog really annoying until about a paragraph before it died. I think that was the point and was a sign of good writing, but not necessarily enjoyable.

I also find it irritating when books censor swearing but include violence, death, injury and prejudice.

I may or may not listen to the next book at some point in the future.

Not an awful book, predictable at times. Writing style was not for me but can see the appeal.

If you like books where the thing that moves the plot along is main characters being chased by a threat, finding safety, then running from the threat, finiding safety, running from threat...lather, rinse, repeat...you'll love this. Especially if you like that part of the threat is a bad guy who really should be dead but just is so consumed with his purpose that he just keeps on living.

I went into it skeptical because I have come to hate gendered plagues in books that only wipe out women or men and there is no discussion of anyone outside the gender binary but that issue resolved itself for me. I didn't HATE this but it annoyed me more than it didn't.
Plus

The dog, who was kind of a hero and was holding the whole book up, is killed. It's terrible.

This is the 1st book in a trilogy and it does not give you a satisfactory wrap-up at the end so would not work as a standalone. I know I won't read the other books after this so I went to wikipedia and read the plot summaries and now I can move on with my life. But 1st I need to watch the movie adaptation which has Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley as the teenage main characters. So fun.

Haven't read a solid teen dystopian in years! Centres around themes of growing up, toxic masculinity, radicalisation, organised religion and the harm it does. The voice annoyed me in the beginning, but I quickly grew accustomed to it when I got to know Todd as a character.

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS

- Todd seems like a very unlikable but realistic character. His development is super nice to see during the story and his perseverance is jawdropping
- The poor grammar and dialect seemed odd at first, but I quickly got used to it and thought of it as normal, because the narration is Todd’s thoughts. We’re reading it as the characters hear it
- Kept me on my toes the whole time. So many moments of diverted expectations. I never knew what would happen
- Viola was my fav character cuz she’s the most logical and relatable to me I guess?
- The author did a good job of almost making me sympathize with Todd wanting to kill Aaron. Almost justified his rage and murderous intent
- Manchee did not deserve to die. What the fuck
- Ending also. What the fuck

Overall a good read. Hoping to continue the series when I’m able
