The call of cthulhu

H.P. Lovecraft

Girl… shut up

Cthulhu is, and will likely remain for a long while, the most iconic creation of H.P. Lovecraft, and this is his/its moment in the spotlight.

The majority of the story is a potent example of Lovecraft's mastery for building up horror, the narrator searching for clues in converging narratives, and coming to the slow but inevitable realization that there is *something* waiting in the fringe of human comprehension. A series of encounters with strange half-men and men haunted by nightmares climaxes with an ineffable horror that Lovecraft masterfully manages to capture.

The one major downside to this story, however, is the narrator and how thunderously dull he can be. The not-too-subtly xenophobic intellectual dedicating his time to hunting for clues on a strange mystery, particularly one related to a deceased relative, is typical for Lovecraft. However, the narrator's experience in the story is almost entirely from secondhand accounts, which undercuts some of the terror we ought to feel; reading a scary story about someone reading a scary story, unsurprisingly, dilutes the scariness.

But I will stand by the four stars because Lovecraft still manages to create a bizarre, intriguing mystery, which circles like a drain around his most famous creation.

Natation is decent, story is… dated

las introducciones de este señor son espectaculares y cómo va sosteniendo el hilo hasta el final, el climax es literal el libro entero jajjsj *guido suller gritando te amooo*

I really love the ideas HP Lovecraft has about horror, like I really love it, and this novella has some really amazing quotes and the mythos is just amazing. But I never really enjoyed reading any of his books, this one included, since I don't think Lovecraft is a good author. Great idea man, but bad at putting words together. It's very difficult to follow the story, the characters are mainly uninteresting and the pacing is just awful, even for such a short book.

Sigh, but I'll just keep reading these stories because I love cosmic horror and what they have inspired in popular culture.

It’s as spooky and eldritch as its reputation. And Lovecraft was definitely also racist
