I can definitely see why this story would've caused quite a stir when it was first released: cults! murderers! giant monsters in the sea! insanity! more cults! mysterious deaths! Did we mention cults!

But coming to the original now, I couldn't get past the over-wrought writing style and the technique of having one narrator just tell a bunch of stories basically linked by him wringing his hands and telling the reader the stories did him a frighten. Again.

And holy Batman, the racism.

So overall quaint, and dime store pulpy, but notable only for giving us all the lasting hope that one day Cthulhu will rise again from the sea and eat the Republican Party in its entirety. And that hope is almost enough for the day.

I appreciate that this is foundational to horror fiction, but I cannot get past his relentless racism. No thanks.

4.03 Stars. Right off the bat, in the first sentence you can tell H.P. Lovecraft is a fantastic writer when he writes, "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents" wow. This short story is so well written that sometimes you gotta read the same sentence 2 or 3 times before getting the whole effect the sentence is portraying. Lovecraft wastes absolutely zero words while he writes, and it's amazing. The story alone was very eerie and creepy. However, it is creepy in the psychological sense, not the monster sense. I would definitely recommend someone to read it if they asked me if they should or not.

I love this tale no matter how many times I read it, I love the imagery, the literary prose, and the references to my home town. All in all I think this is Lovecraft at his finest.

Tant pis.
