I finally read it! I was a fan of the play back in 2016 and have seen the movie too. Both the play and the movie follow the story very very faithfully. It was nice finally getting another book in Japanese read.

There was an extra scene in this which I have never seen in either version and for good reason because it was absolutely fucking horrifying and related to a child (an actual child, not a middle schooler like the rest of the cast).

Definitely trigger warning in here for child mutilation, murder, sexual assault, and graphic depictions of violence.

I did actually finish this book. I decided to say I didn’t because I don’t want to give it a rating. A slasher type horror about middle schoolers who despise adults and admire beauty and youth. If you don’t like pevertisism, I don’t suggest you read this.

um no comment tbh
dark funny

I don’t know if exploitation manga is a thing, but this is it. Fascism, violence, and homosexuality are some of the main taboos on display courtesy of a sadistic club of middle-school boys building a robot in a secret hideout somewhere in the depths of an abstract, oppressively industrial factory town. The substance is a boring mess of clichéed pacing techniques and stolen narratives cobbled together to prop up the style, which is deliberately melodramatic and superficial, and just about worth the rest. The boys’ fetishization of beauty and youth as part of their violent fanaticism has strong echoes of Yukio Mishima in it, but unlike his work the theatricality and 2-d characters keep the reader at a cynical distance, like we’re watching somebody else’s bad dream. That’s probably for the best though.
