This book is so heavy, if I read a description of it I wouldn’t want to read it. But I loved it. I couldn’t put it down and I missed it for days after I finished

Incredibly moving and engrossing modern-day take on David Copperfield in the Appalachia region. I kept having to pause the audiobook - wonderfully narrated by Charlie Thurston - to catch my breath or cry, or just to process what I'd just heard.

I truly struggled with this for the first 4 or 5 hours. It was so depressing. But Ben said it was a great book, so I persevered, and I’m really glad I did. This was not only an extremely well-written novel with a classic Bildungsroman structure, it was a timely message. My coastal elite privileged self has heard of stories like Demon’s, but to experience it so intimately is extremely powerful. It gives me more empathy for people who are probably very far from my political leanings, and I think that’s a good thing. Ben has also recommended I follow this read up with Empire of Pain. I’m sure that will be depressing too, but I want to better understand this opioid epidemic.

The type of soul-aching sad that prohibits you from even crying, this novel pushes the boundaries of what we know and understand about the ravages that drugs, particularly opiates, have doled out to the people of Appalachia. Even though you can see the cycle happening before it ever does, you can’t help but love and root for Demon as an unlikely hero. The characters are beautifully and painstakingly crafted to reflect the complexities found in mountain folks. For some reason, it took me a long time to finish the book — but I’m so glad I did.

A really tough read but worth it. Sucks you right in, punches you in the gut and throws you out on the other side with a whole new set of emotions.
