Growing up in Appalacia meant seeing the truth written in this book with my own two eyes.
The pill mills, the overdoses, the kids in and out of foster care, the abuse, growing up too fast. This is a viceral book, with a happy ending. I cried many times. I had my own Dori. He died the same way she did. I miss him. I lost him 6 years ago and the pain never goes away. I have the same anger in my chest as Demon.

Demon Copperhead is a hard read. It isn't hard in terms of the actual language of it not making too much sense, but it's hard because you want Demon to stop doing so much shit. You want him to stop suffering, to get help before he loses everything. It's emotional, it's devastating, and, if anything, it is full of hope. Hope to become better, to recover, to mend oneself and become a person who, while still having traumas, is an actual person. Overall fantastic :)

This book is so heavy, if I read a description of it I wouldn’t want to read it. But I loved it. I couldn’t put it down and I missed it for days after I finished

"Never be mean in anything. Never be false. Never be cruel. I can always be hopeful of you."

"No credit given for all the extra miles that take you nowhere."

“Certain pitiful souls around here see whiteness as their last asset that hasn’t been totaled or repossessed.”

Demon Copperhead was a tough read. Not because the writing wasn't great, because it was. And not because it wasn't an interesting story, because it was. However, it was incredibly dark, often quite sad, and at times, very slow. I learned a lot while reading this book -- about the opioid crisis, about how easy it was to get involved in it, and the history of the area. I thought about the book for quite some time after reading it. Not quite missing the characters, but hoping they were okay. It is not, however, a book I imagine I will be re-reading in the future.
