This was a real downer of a book. Very well written, made me care for the characters and feel what they were feeling for sure, so I loved that. And it was a different perspective of life to read that you don’t usually normally get from book. But do not go in to this expecting anything happy for basically the whole book, which was maybe the point, but can’t say I’d recommend it too much.

It's hard not to see this as one of my favourite novels now. I just didn't want it to end. I'm a huge Douglas Stuart fan and similar to Young Mungo and Shuggie Bain, Kingsolver tackles poverty in a way that never patronizes its characters. I loved them all so much and respected their paths and truly felt the pain when times were hard. Demon is the star and I want to keep following where he ends up.
