Maybe it was just me but I found this book really boring. I only picked it up and finished it for a reading challenge.

"My hands are mine and mine alone and I’ll do whatever I want with them, and I want to use them to sew dresses and to point my finger in your face and tell you that my hands are mine alone and I’ll do whatever I damn well please with them."

From THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF EURIDICE GUSMAO by Martha Batalha, translated from the Portuguese (Brazil) by Eric M. B. Becker / 2016 in Brazil, 2017 in English by @oneworldpublications
Intimate and domestic life of 1940s/1950s middle-class women in Rio de Janeiro - a story of families, of missed opportunities, and of finding fulfillment. Each character we meet gets a detailed back story, a context for why they do/act the way they do. These short histories were artfully arranged and interspersed into the main storyline.
Much more wry and subversive than you would expect from the whimsical cover. Euridice Gusmao is a delightful character. Really liked this debut. Here's hoping Batalha writes more, and that her works trickle into English as well.

Set in Rio de Janeiro during the 1940s, this book is the fascinating story of Euridice who gives up on her dreams and aspirations to become a model daughter having witnessed her parent’s agony and heartbreak after her beloved older sister, Guida elopes.
Euridice settles for a marriage with a tradition-loving husband to satisfy her parents and accepts her role as a housewife even though she is restless and desires to become independent, something that her husband vehemently disapproves of.
As a passionate cook, she embarks on a journey of creating her own gourmet recipes but is soon disheartened by her dull husband’s stifling remarks.
She discovers her talent as a seamstress and decides to pursue it as a profession until her husband finds out and his fragile ego is unable to bear the possible thought that people may assume, that he is unable to provide for his family.
Despite the title, the story is not restricted to Euridice alone but also involves a host of other characters and their backstories. Though I did enjoy reading about the other characters I found myself wanting to know more about Euridice as she continually fought off her ambitions to appease her repressive husband.
An endearing and intimate portrait of middle-class families centered around the women whose sacrifices were and still are never acknowledged enough.
The only negatives I got from this book were -that the end was slightly disappointing and a line in the story that is insulting and demeaning to the Natives and frankly, shouldn’t have been there in the book.
The story itself was charming and I would definitely want to read more from the author.
