The way this story highlights the circle of violence that exists in our world.. I will be thinking about this book and it’s last lines for a long time.

It was a challenging book to wrap my head around, because the entire book is told from a perspective wildly different, and i spent every other sentence trying to realign my view of the world to match the characters. It was a brilliant book in the way that it asked me to do this very seamlessly and it was very thought provoking for this perspective shift. Loved the book overall and had a very interesting message at the end.

this story is something else.

it’s strange and so different and at the same time speaks so many truths.

i liked and hated how the whales are humanities in this book. how the use our kinds of weapons, ships and live in cities and work, instead of having a more animalistic version of those things - BUT it does make this story appeal to more readers i would guess.
it makes it easier to see people in the whales and connect to the story.

i do love how this story ends, how it discovered and unveils this devil and shows what a real devil is. that’s just how i enjoy this type of story.

but it’s pretty brutal.
both in picture and storytelling.
there is a lot of death, murder and killing. there is torture and brutality…
it’s not a nice little story.

but i think it works very well and i enjoyed it a lot more than i expected both the first time i read it and even more so on the reread.

it’s something different but well told.

Fast read, but not too fast. Love the concept at the heart of the story (whales hunting men as men hunt whales) and the reflection it brings. The illustrations are gorgeous and they help both to imagine the setting and carry the atmosphere.
