Ex-Communication by Peter Clines

Ex-Communication takes a refreshing turn in the Ex serie by Peter Clines. Instead of waiting for the same formula used in the first two books to become stale, he decided instead to go back to the enemy that form the base of the serie: the zombies. This book feels a lot more claustrophobic and it is possible to feel how the different characters feel oppressed by their confinement within the Mount.

The book also introduces some new characters that tie the loose ends from the last two books together. The events of the last book still have an effect on the Superheroes as they try to save the Mount from another super threat.

I found this book is like chewing gum, easy to read and full and savour, but ultimately without calories. The writing style is reminiscent of screenplay and the action goes forward without catching his breath. While it is a guilty pleasure, I still want to recommend this book to anyone who already appreciated the first two.

I really enjoyed this book though I probably would've liked it even more if I hadn't accidentally read the fourth book ahead of this one. But since I did somehow manage to read them out of order - the horror! - it spoiled some things for me in this book so obviously the plot twists weren't, um, really plot twists for me. That however is not the author's fault. The writing style is still suspenseful and engaging without ever feeling over-cluttered and the characters are just as rootable as ever. Well some of them are anyway; some of them are just plain nasty. My only complaint is the status of one of the relationships. I've been waiting since the first book for the next step to be reached so finding out that it happened off the page in between books was a big disappointment. Other than that though it was another solid entry into the series.

Another winner in the series. I love the big picture story going on here in each snapshot. Great characters and great action combine to make a thrilling read that you don't want to put down.

I'm sad that I'm out of this series. Fun post-apocalyptic zombie/super hero book.

I still miss the hero who died in book 1. Captain Freedom is a good add to the mix though. I like that the Unbreakables and Seventeens have been more integrated into the Mount. The new bad(s) are really bad.

Clines really knows how to write interesting and easy-to-follow action sequences. The final acts of each of these three books are white-knuckle affairs that you cant help but illustrate in your own head. It's hard not to wonder if these would be better as comic books, but the level of detail afforded by prose novels is important to the stories. I both liked and disliked the religious slant that was introduced here but it fits well with the main villain and is what would probably happen given the circumstances. More character growth was welcome for Stealth and Zzzap but I found myself missing Cerberus, and the Driver -- who I thought was really cool -- was nowhere to be seen. The lone new character for this installment was clever and refreshing. My biggest complaint is having to wait until 2014 for the next one.

What a great series. I love all the characters and Peter has an amazing imagination and has created a world where he can let it free. I am already getting antzy about the end of the series and I still have one more book to go!

Please get these books and read them. They are going to get huge and become a movie or at the very least a cool ass tv show.

Peter Clines delivers again. Ex-Heroes is without a doubt my favorite book series currently being published. Zombies are everywhere at the moment but Peter manages to keep this story fresh (no pun intended) and exciting all the while delivering an amazing tale of super heroes trying to survive in an apocalypse. Highly recommended to both fans of zombies and super heroes.

Avengers meets the walking dead is the blurb on the book. Couldn’t agree more. Excellent addition.
