I struggled with rating this book, and in the end wonder if the fault isn't my own for trying to read it on my own timetable rather than at the pace the book demanded. I probably liked it better than "3 stars" suggests, but felt too ambivalent in the end to give it more. Interestingly, my inability to connect with most of the narrators was less of a problem than my expectation that the beauty of the novel as a whole would ultimately match that of its many vignettes.

I just can’t stay engaged during this second part with so many narrators. It doesn’t feel that interesting or fun anymore.

Un des mes livres préférés. Inconcevable de l'avoir lu si tard. Une claque.

captures what it feels like to be young and a part of a creative scene. it doesn’t matter if anyone’s any good at any of it, it’s all just passion and feeling like you’re on the verge of something huge

This book is really dope as a series of interconnected snapshots. So many interesting characters. And what they reveal about visceral realism and its main figures is all fantastic and enjoyable to read. But why is this book bracketed by such a dumb story of baby boring in the desert w his heroes???

The hype about this book is pretty much true. You may be inclined to stop reading around page 140 or so, but stick with it. By the end, it casts an odd spell. Think of it as a Mexican "[b:On the Road|6288|The Road|Cormac McCarthy|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21E8H3D1JSL._SL75_.jpg|3355573]," with more literate (and sexually active) characters.
