Another re-read for me - this novel will always hold an incredibly special place in my heart. I have no ties to Judaism, the Holocaust, or Nazi Germany, but I do fiercely love books and the world they open up for us. The story and themes (unfortunately) feel more poignant and relevant (in the US in particular) than when I first read “The Book Thief.” Words can be harmful and devastating, but they can always be powerful, hopeful, loving, engaging, enlightening. They can be so many things, and restricting access to certain collections of words is a heinous act of taking away the people’s liberty, and only enforces a worse kind of world to live in.

Brilliant book, possibly the best I’ve ever read, managed to give it a 5.75 stars.
"I can promise you that the world is a factory. The sun stirs it, the humans rule it. And I remain. I carry them away."

A different look into a dark time in history. One of the author's biggest points is how powerful words are - and he writes in such a stunningly beautiful way. Such despair and tragedy written in a way that is artistic and flowing but never takes away from the pain of the moment. You feel every letter of every word. Watching Leslie grow from a little girl into a young woman through one of the darkest chapters in the world, you're taken on a journey that will remain with you long after the book is finished.

“Sometimes I imagined how everything looked above those clouds, knowing without question that the sun was blond, and the endless atmosphere as a giant blue eye.”
A great, moving story. Honestly, I felt that it could have been a little shorter, although the length did help us to get to know the characters more. Zusak has a great writing style, and I really enjoyed this book, especially since it left me in tears.

Moving book showing how a society slides into chaos and cruelty through fear and evil, lovely characters heartbreaking but with hope
