Viola’s storytelling ability coupled with the depths of vulnerability and healing she shares had me in awe throughout each chapter. I felt I saw a distant relative telling me their life lessons and speaking to the young girl, adolescent in me.

I wish everyone could read this and understand how beautifully tormenting it is to heal your inner child.  It’s something so many people refuse to believe they need to do, when it’s the root of so many vicious cycles in life. Hug them, believe them, reassure them, they will learn to feel safe.

Viola speaks about so many incredibly difficult moments with the kind of grace one only gains by surrendering to loving people for exactly who they are. Her love for her family is her driving force.

Would definitely recommend listening to the audiobook! It feels like having coffee with a lifelong friend with an incredible story.

This has to be listened to. Viola Davis has such a beautiful voice and brings the story alive with her narration. Moving story of family, hardship, luck, and hope. I’m going to go watch Fences now 🥰

This book was great. It was an excellent glimpse into Davis’ life and I appreciate her willingness to share her story. Towards the end, the topics fell heavier. I also think there were things that hit closer to home for me in the latter part of the book compared with the former.

Many CW with this one. Most are mild in description

Such a powerful story.  One that is absolutely heartbreaking and painstakingly beautiful at the same time.  If you can listen to this audiobook, I highly recommend that option.  Viola is, as many know, a magical storyteller.  I shed a few tears throughout, and wept at the end of the last chapter.  I jotted down so many quotes from this book.  I didn’t expect to relate and yet there were moments I did, and she gave me new perspective in those moments.  I have been a fan of Viola’s for some time now, but this just gives me a new level of respect and love for her.

Amazing audiobook. Her childhood was unfortunately so relatable and hit me hard. I don't watch TV or movies much so I didn't know her but I'm definitely a big fan now. This was beautiful written.
