it’s really wonderful to me how cl keep growing as authors and get more and more comfortable with storytelling but....this book, however cute, just didn’t. do it for me. :(

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren

A sweet, delightful story about Mae, a twenty-something who ends up in a weird Groundhog Day scenario after leaving her favourite place on Earth - Christmas holidays at a cozy cabin with her extended, chosen family. She’s forced onto a path of figuring out what makes her happy, maybe?

Mae isn’t really sure why she’s reliving the Christmas holidays over and over, and the reader doesn’t really get anymore insight. Despite the loose plot framework, I enjoyed this lighthearted and cheery romance immensely. If Netflix could make a holiday movie out of this book ASAP, please!

For fans of the friends-to-lovers trope, this one is for you! I thought this was so sweet without being too cheesy, and the steaminess factor is pretty low. It was funny, and I enjoyed all the secondary characters. Reading this was a cozy, uplifting way to spend an afternoon, and I think many readers would enjoy it, wintertime or not. It is one of my top 3 favourite Christina Lauren reads!

Thank you to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for free access to an e-copy of this book in exchange for review. It is out now!

Re-read in 2022: I love this book again! I liked the relationship between the two main characters more this time, and I didn’t mind the lack of resets, it seemed like just enough this time. I still wish we could have seen the friendship between the younger brother, although that might have made me want them together instead!

First read in 2020: I’m a fan of Christina Lauren’s books, and this Christmas one didn’t disappoint! I love the Groundhog Day premise, but I wish there would have been a few more resets. I think it’s a fun way to get to know the characters and it wasn’t utilized as well as it could have been. I also think we probably could have used more background and character development of the younger brother. All in all, it was a cute romcom book to enjoy during the most wonderful time of year.

In a Holidaze follows Mae, who’s spending her Christmas vacation like she has every year since birth, with her family friends, more family than friends, at their cottage. The book follows Mae through the vacation until something unexpected happens, an accident causes Mae to travel back in time, reliving the same holiday over, and over again. Mae has to deal with knowing what comes next, how to change it, fix it (and hopefully not send herself back again!), alongside dealing with her ever present crush on Andrew.

I liked this book! I had a lot of life happen while reading it so I read it over a long period of time which didn’t help. Mae was funny and likeable, the story is heartwarming and sweet. I loved the group of characters, they were more diverse and interesting than I usually find. The dynamics between the characters was awesome, I love that home feeling this book brought. However, I thought the time travel was super unnecessary. To me it really felt like a weird secondary part of the story, very present at first but then tapers off. I think this book would still be good without it. Also, I found some aspects too cheesy, especially the cringey nicknames the characters use for each other. It’s hard to believe Mae is 30, she presents as much younger. I did like the romance between her and Andrew and how it was thrown off and kept me wondering, but I wish this was expanded more. Just a tad more drama, and less silly reasons for why he’s upset. All in all, I do think this book could’ve been flushed out more, but, I really did enjoy it! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the free preview in exchange for an honest review!

What a fun, light hearted quick read! Perfect for the holiday season! I love that the focus of the story was to do what makes you happy and not what you have always done. (Tradition) This book is terrific!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
