I love Nezha so much, it physically hurts. Actually, this might be the reason why I liked this book even more than the first part. It also definitely helped that stuffTM happend to Rin, that will forever justify all of her rage to me.

I am so heartbroken, I loved the last "happy" chapter where they got drunk and had fun. I knew a betrayal was coming because I got spoilerd but I convinced myself that it would be that Rin leaves Arlong. I am mad at Nezha but I also... can understand him in some way? I think he's just very naïve and really believes in the Republic. I bet it hurt him too, having to betray Rin. He also really cares about the people, he faced his dad when Rin was still much more concerned with winning this war then the fate of the southeners.

R.F. Kuang’s sequel to the profoundly thought provoking POPPY WAR adds even more tension and impact when it comes to the effects of war.

The story starts right where THE POPPY WAR ends. Rin is coming to terms with the events that occurred at the end of the previous book, and Kuang doesn’t hesitate to show her struggling with this.
She also shows Rin’s deep drug addled state where her reliance on opium interferes with her psyche.

As THE DRAGON REPUBLIC continues, readers see how important political alliances are in terms of war. Kuang does a great job at showing how ugly the behind the scenes discussions can be.

This book dodged the second book syndrome. It was even more captivating than its predecessor, and it holds THE BURNING GOD to a high standard since Kuang provides so much buildup in the end. Much praise for her and this book!

If you enjoy Poppy war (first book) definitely read this one. The stories continue, a war between good/bad, right and wrong, responsibilities, love/hate, danger/peace. The book has all. Red. It.

R.F. Kuang has proved the sentiment that ‘sequels are always worse’ completely wrong. This book was so good that I was left feeling PHYSICALLY ILL by the end and completely traumatised…

The second book of the trilogy is better than the first, but they are most definitely both 5 stars.

I hate and love Nezha. I am obsessed with Kitay. Daji? DAJI?

It was an odd experience to want to know what’s going to happen next but also despise almost every decision made by every character. There were SO many battles that it got muddy in the middle.  Trying to remember which battle they were referring to later made the book tricky to follow at times. I think that experience would be different reading it in print. I’m excited to see where the third book takes the story… hopefully to some moral evolution but also revolution.
