Picked this up and was so ready to get motivated. Convince me! Help me! Heal me! Let's go!
By the end, my concern for myself had been replaced by worry for the author. This was a sad book. Tonally it hung around the levels of functional hopelessness to abject depression.
That's not an insult to Flanders. I have also visited the pits of abject depression. But, like, the narrative voice wasn't happy at any point in this? There was a great hollowness. I expected a cutesy little book on minimalism, and was somewhat unprepared for two hundred pages about a successive list of soul-destroying addictions.

Inspiriring.
The part about not able to let go who you wish to be rings very deeply with me. I also love the author summarize and outlined the steps you need when you want to follow the challenge.
Worth a re-read for me.

It was ok at the beginning but about halfway through it got super judgy and preachy. She says often enough that everyone is different but she sure makes it seem like hers is the right way. I’m all for saving money and reducing consumption but I’m not about to learn how to sew just so I can fix my old navy pajama pants.
Moderate: Mental illness, Body shaming, Fatphobia, Alcoholism, Alcohol, and Addiction

I really enjoyed this book, and it inspired me to do something similar in the future.
I did enjoy that at the end, she gave specific dollar amounts of what she saved, spent, and lived on over the year of her ban, because it did help me to realize that with my current income and type of job, it may not be the best time to take this challenge on 😅
