This is an excellent book on poetic form. Very readable, but destined to find a place on my writing reference shelf. Each section deals with a particular form (Villanelle, Sestina, Sonnets, etc.) and has a concise description of the form, a short history, and a solid selection of examples. The poems try to reflect the traditional form as well as contemporary examples. In doing this, the authors have tried to demonstrate both strict, traditional forms and some less strict variations.

Overall, a fantastic book for any writer or reader of poetry.

I read this for a class, and I really loved it. I found some of my new favorite poems, and I feel that I have a larger grasp on poetry now.

Fairly good and helpful anthology of the various different poetic forms. Major downside was that they had no footnotes to explain some of the allusions made. But as a basic anthology, it was fairly well put together

Rating: 3.5 Stars (Good).

A little flowery for my taste, but a good reference for a general list of historic poetic form. A little disappointed it's so Euro-centric, but I suppose that's to be expected. Happy to have in my library and refer back to if need be.
