Two stars from me :/ this book was interesting but failed to draw any major conclusions between heavy metals exposure and serial killers. It was a lot of conjecture and when some link did appear, it was revealed over halfway through the book.

The four main topics—bridge malfunctions leading to car accidents and deaths, serial killers in the PNW, lead/arsenic as a silent killer or influence, and the author’s personal anecdotes all fought each other and led to a barely cohesive narrative. In addition, the detailed descriptions of gruesome crimes against women were overly described to the point of needing to pause the audiobook. I’m an avid true crime podcast listener, but this was too much and leaned into the exploitative realm. I’m all for telling a story as it happened, but some parts seemed truly unnecessary and turned the victims into spectacles.

Overall, interesting idea but I don’t think the execution was there.

An incredible book that makes you wonder how much we are to blame for the creation of our worst monsters
