Definitely a no plot, just vibes book. Some of the vignettes really worked for me, while others didn’t work as well. Cusk does a really excellent job of rendering men who are threatening and unsettling in precisely the way so many “non-threatening” men can be. And she has an incredible ability to capture all of the ways humans are pompous and self-absorbed and the strangeness of so much conversation, especially in contexts where we don’t know each other.

Interesting character studies flowing into eachother. I probably would have found it more interesting if I could have looked at the text - I shouldn't have read it as an audiobook. Maybe I'll revisit it as a physical book one day.

i mean ienjoyed the novel, it has beautiful writing, so a very nice read. i liked learning about the different characters, diving into their personal lives, their failing marriages and experiences. at times though, the writing got a little too pretentious? for me. no one talks like cusk writes and that's alright, but it makes the dialogue so unreal. at times whole paragraphs went over my head because the words used were so niche and as a non-native speaker it was hard to understand. still, i enjoyed it. this isn't a plot driven book, which i normally dislike, but it was still very interesting.

I did like parts of this, felt like it had a nice calm flow and i imagine it would be a nice reflective summer read, but other parts were just a bit dull and meandering if i’m honest. mixed feelings. 3 stars
