It's no secret that Densmore has some hard feelings about his time with The Doors. After reading Manzarek's autobiography, it was interesting to read about the same events from a different perspective.
This biography of Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors, by the drummer reads more like his memoir of growing up in the 60's with band members as siblings. The "letter" to Morrison interspersed throughout seemed a bit gimmicky and Densmore seems to bemoan his fate at not being in a flower-child band a bit much but the genius of the band members and Morrison does come through and speaks to why their music has remained viable in succeeding decades. A favorite quote from this book occurs about the time when they were approached by the car company Buick to use Light My Fire in a commercial and the band members were willing but Morrison was not. Densmore writes "We were becoming disciples in the number-one belief in American: $ is God. Older cultures had churches as the center of their cities. Today we seem to build our urban centers around banks." p. 202
While I found Ray’s book on his experience in the Doors more dramatic, I found myself being much more able to put myself in John Densmore’s shoes as the shy guy in the band.
This book does a much better job admitting the faults of himself as well as giving a more realistic recount of Jim destroying his life with the alcohol.
His drumming and his words will forever be with me as the music of the Doors has affected who I am greatly.
I am looking forward to reading Robby’s book next.
RIP to Ray and Jim and wishing John and Robby the best of health for eternity

Riders on the Storm, My Life with Jim Morrison and the Doors by John Densmore
I recall hearing one of the songs waiting in traffic in NY on our way back from NJ and they were playing the longer version and you could really get into hearing the lyrics and what the song was really about.
Took me by surprise what it was about-so strong and open in the 60's.
Some really beautiful lyrics and some raunchy ones, never understood why all the drugs, guess he didn't like the world he was living in. Great understanding now of how things happened and why and what the songs really mean.
The others met along the way are some of my favorite singers.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

A good story from the eyes of drummer John Densmore. Not as much detail as a lot of the other Doors book, and this is more about his life with the band, and I find it not as interesting as the ones which focus more on Jim. Could of course be because I love Jim Morrison and I'm biased but oh well.

Hi, I'm John Densmore, and I was drummer for the Doors! I know, I know. Thank you. Thank you. You may be seated.
Anyway, you should read my book. It is full of amazing insight, such as:
1. Jim Morrison = douche.
2. My genitals are really itchy.
3. We were so mistreated by that douche Jim Morrison.
4. But he was kind of a mystic shaman prophet douche.
5. And he made us rich.
6. The record company totally bastardized our music because they were so obsessed with making money. They didn't realize what a brilliant poet mystic Jim was.
7. But he was pretty much a drunken asshole.
8. Van Morrison: also awesome. Not related to Jim.
9. Nothing important has happened to music since Bob Marley.
10. I mean, they really itch. Bad.
