Wow. If only she received/accepted the love she deserved. Her town did her so dirty, full of hate. This book was so good and made me happy to hear about her living with militant lesbians in SF.

The amazon reviews of this book are very disdainful, but the reviews here seem a bit more positive. Hmm. Well, I'll give it a go...

I'd say this is the most evocative biography of Janis Joplin I've read. But it's also the most negative. So... I'm torn.

A definite slow read. I liked how the author allowed us to experience her memories of what the 60s were like. She also allowed us to see what she saw of Janis.

Janis seemed to have likened herself to Bessie Smith but she reminded me more of a May West. Janis Joplin was brilliant in so many ways but her stunted emotions led her to use drugs. I think she may have been bi-polar. She had extreme highs and lows. I felt for her. There were not many real people around her and those that did really care for her, she dismissed, largely due to her drinking and inability to believe she was worth caring for. I believe she committed suicide by heroin. Her preparations days before her death, leave me to believe it was so. Eventually, her drinking would have killed her. Sad.

A great account of this musician's life and unfortunate demise with a peek into the music culture at the time. Read out of curious interest not because I'm a big fan, if you like music, worth a read.

I learned a lot about Janis. I may be slightly less of a fan of hers now. (I'm 25, I did not grow up hearing about her, just enjoying her music.) It's written well enough to keep me interested and entertained. I got slightly confused a few times by all the different people in Janis's circles throughout her life having very similar names. I like that Myra personally knew and loved Janis.
Learning the truth of her life, my heart just breaks for her. I wish she would have had some real friends at any point in her life.
Read this if you want your eyes opened to the life of Janis Joplin for sure.

Perhaps I loved it so much because I first read it at 14, when janis joplin had completely turned my music world upside down.
