Once this book starts it's hard to put it down. Many of the characterization issues from the first book get fixed early on, though I still find the speed at which the romantic relationships change a bit unrealistic. I'm looking forward to seeing how things pan out in the next book.

**Update from 2023 reread**
This book starts off on about the same level as ToG, but once we hit part two the series really starts to take shape. I’m glad to have gotten past the first two books, and am very excited to reread the rest of the series!

Wow! What a book 2. Please note that while his review will not contain
spoilers for Crown of Midnight, it may contain spoilers for the first book in the series, Throne of Glass.

Crown of Midnight picks up shortly after the first book. Celaena has been he king's champion for a little while, and she has already handled several things for him... or so it seems. Even with the danger it poses, Celaena has been doing what she can against the king. Then, she gets a new mission to kill a man named Archer - a man she knows from her time as an assassin. She's given a month to end him.

Meanwhile, things are still strange at the castle. A doorknob reveals its ability to talk, mysteries are uncovered as the old tomb is explored, and a creepy hooded figure is spotted at night outside the library. So many secrets hide just below the surface and Celaena toes the line as she tries to uncover them.

I really loved Celaena in this book. She's fiercer than she was in the last book, but her sweet side is still present. Seeing her go full on assassin was fascinating though, and we really had a chance to see why she was so feared to begin with.

Dorian had his own interesting story unfolding during this book as well, while he and Celaena aren't necessarily on the best of terms, they are still friendly enough. I like that they are still there for one another, even after everything.

Chaol has grown on me more too - while I didn't like every decision he made, I understood his thought process, and  I knew he was just doing what he thought was best. He loves fiercely, and he will do anything for those he cares about.

Overall, this book was an awesome addition to the fist book. Mysteries are unfolding, but I feel like we aren't getting into things too quickly, even with the book feeling fast paced. It's all just right. I can't wait to see what's next! I'm sure I’ll devour the next book like I did with this one.

A great addition to the Throne of Glass series! I loved seeing the further development and background reveal for the main characters; the further explanation behind the king's actions; and the events that shook our character's paths in dramatic ways.
