My stepdad’s Rotary Readers picked this book this month, so I read it too. I don’t think I would have chosen it otherwise. Straight chronicles her female ancestors as well as the women of her husband’s lineage. Then about 2/3 of the way in, it switches to more individual essays on raising mixed race children. The stories themselves were somewhat interesting, but the overall story arc felt disjointed. It felt like maybe it should have been reformatted as an essay collection. I honor the general message though. These stories are not of famous women. They won’t be seen in history books or movies, but every woman’s story is important in some regard. All our possessions, our homes, and even our bodies are impermanent, but memories and stories can last forever if protected and passed down.
